Hermansson (22-6 MMA) entered tonight’s fight looking to rebound from his recent unanimous decision loss to Marvin Vettori. Prior to that setback, ‘The Joker’ had earned an impressive first round submission victory over Kelvin Gastelum.

Edmen Shahbazyan had his eyes on Jack Hermansson after their recent fights. In August, Shahbazyan headlined his first UFC show but came up short against Derek Brunson. After the loss, the now 23-year-old wanted some time off to work on his skills, and after Hermansson lost to Marvin Vettori, he said to his team that is who he wants to fight next.

Edmen Shahbazyan has opened up on his first career loss to Derek Burnson last August. At UFC Vegas 5, Shahbazyan and Brunson were promoted to the main event and were set to fight five rounds. Entering the scrap, many expected Shahbazyan to get an early KO, and so too did the rising star. However, after the first round, he began to gas out and suffered a third-round TKO loss.

Edmen Shahbazyan is back. According to Manouk Akopyan of the LA Times, and confirmed by BJPENN.com, Shahbazyan will fight sixth-ranked middleweight, Jack Hermansson at UFC 262 on May 15. The event will also take place in Houston, Texas with a full crowd.

Former Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum has called out fellow middleweight contender Edmen Shahbazyan for an upcoming fight at 185lbs. Gastelum most recently was seen on Fight Island getting submitted by a Jack Hermansson heel hook this past summer. Prior to that, he had dropped a split decision to Darren Till and lost a unanimous decision to Israel Adesanya. Overall, Gastelum has lost three straight fights in the Octagon, but he is still ranked at No. 8 in the UFC because his three losses were to higher-ranked opponents. Overall, Gastelum is 10-6, 1 NC in the Octagon.

UFC middleweight contender Edmen Shahbazyan has reportedly been disciplined for displaying the flag of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in his recent loss to Derek Brunson. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is a region that is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is predominantly populated by Armenians, many of whom feel it belongs to Armenia. The contested region was the subject of a short war in 1920, another violent conflict in the early 90s, and has been the site of several bloody skirmishes as recently as this year. Suffice it to say that is remains the source of much turmoil, with both countries claiming ownership of it.

During fight week, all the talk was on Shahbazyan and how this will be a coming-out party for him. He was a massive favorite but it was the veteran in Brunson who got the job done by third-round TKO.

UFC middleweight prospect Edmen Shahbazyan has released a statement following his third-round TKO loss to Derek Brunson at UFC Vegas 5. Shahbazyan’s first UFC main event did not go as planned. After a strong start in the first round, the 22-year-old Californian began to fade badly in the second round. Brunson turned on the gas and hurt Shahbazyan, nearly finishing him with ground and pound just before the end of the second round. The fight somehow was allowed to enter the third round, but referee Herb Dean decided he had finally seen enough and stopped the fight early in the third and final round after Shahbazyan ate a few more big shots.
